In its first four years, the Player's Cup was a three day stroke play tournament. It could not have been built without the significant efforts of Mike Barnett and Discraft. In 2009, a one year hiatus was taken to regroup and evaluate the goals of the tournament.

Beginning in 2010, the Player's Cup was reborn as a bracketed Match Play Championship. Steven Dodge and Vibram Disc Golf joined forces with Mike Barnett to create what should be one of the most spectacular, fan-friendly events of the disc golf season.

In 2011, there are plans to re-introduce the ladies side of the Player's Cup.
